Success for UTM Consultants' Oasis Montaj Course in Bristol

Earlier this month, from the 9th until the 12th of September, members of UTM’s Hydrographic Survey Division spent four days at the company’s central-Bristol offices to help with the smooth running of the region’s first intensive Oasis Montaj UXO Marine training course.

Having enjoyed great successes with past software training courses held in Cornwall, UTM’s decision to run such a specialised event in Bristol would extend industry-leading training opportunities to a new audience of geophysical and hydrographic survey professionals in the South West of the UK.

Attended by Offshore Geophysical Professionals and Students

As with previous software training courses hosted by UTM, the event welcomed an international array of freelance geophysicists and hydrographic surveyors from UTM’s offshore community – along with Technical Analyst & UXO Marine Trainer Becky Bodger, from Geosoft / Seequent.

Additionally, further to a nascent collaboration between UTM and the Bristol University School of Earth Sciences, the course also welcomed Jess – a PhD student at Bristol University – as part of the company’s commitment to investing in and upskilling future workforces.

Focus on UXO Identification with Magnetic Data

The course began with an introduction to Oasis Montaj before progressing to focus on some of the tools commonly used in the identification of UXOs with magnetic data and working through three different workflows specific to single magnetometers, horizontal gradient systems and vertical gradient systems.

After the course we caught up with Geophysicist / Geophysical Engineer Adam Pease to get his thoughts on the content, delivery, it’s applications and UTM’s choice to host in Bristol for the first time.

An Enjoyable Experience with Immediate Real-World Applications

“I really enjoyed the course”, said Adam.

“I’ve used Oasis a number of times before for work but this was a great opportunity to refresh and learn new applications that the updated version of the software now includes”.

According to Adam, the four days were packed with information – but the delivery and pacing of the course ensured that it remained enjoyable for everyone.

“I discovered loads about the software’s added extras”, he said. “Learning more about the various ways to process the data was great, and I added a lot to my existing knowledge in terms of single and multiple magnetometer setups. The sections on gradiometer setups such as TVG were really interesting, for example, as these seem to be gaining a lot of popularity in my field of work”.

On the subject of work, Adam was also confident that his experience on the Oasis Montaj UXO Marine training course would be of immediate benefit to his clients.

“All clients working on UXO Surveys will be using Oasis to process the magnetometer data”, he continued, “so both offshore at acquisition stage and then in the office for further processing and post-acquisition this will come in handy”.

If Adam was positive about the vocational benefits of the course, he was delighted to have had Becky at the head of the course.

“Along with the UTM team, who were really easy to approach and interested in what we got up to offshore, the knowledge and professionalism shown by Becky, our trainer, was top quality”, he said. “The location was great, too! I live in Norwich (so it was a bit of a trek) but the longevity of the course made it more than worthwhile. I was really impressed with all the amenities in Bristol and the whole city itself, having never been before. I would most definitely return”.

It’s safe to say that this Oasis Montaj UXO Marine Course really went off with a bang!
